How to Adapt Classroom Resources for Dyspraxia

Dyspraxia mainly affects motor coordination and organisation — handwriting, spatial layout on the page, and sequencing multi-step physical tasks — not necessarily reading comprehension.

Strategies

  • Generous spacing

    Clear visual separation between sections; cramped layouts increase errors and slow pupils down.

  • Numbered, sequential steps

    Especially for any multi-part physical or practical task.

  • Consistent, simple layout

    Reduces the organisational and motor load of navigating a resource, on top of the spacing point above.

  • Alternative response formats where handwriting isn't the point

    Matching, true/false, multiple-choice, or gap-fill instead of extended handwriting, specifically when handwriting itself isn't the skill being assessed. Content complexity and task demand stay the same — only the physical response format changes.

Not the same as Cognitive Delay

Both can use matching/tick-style tasks, but for different reasons. Dyspraxia support targets motor/output demand while keeping full content complexity intact; Cognitive Delay support simplifies the underlying cognitive demand itself. Worth keeping that distinction clear rather than treating "visual task formats" as one undifferentiated fix.
